Frequently asked questions
Clear answers.
Practical next steps.
You do not need a technical plan before starting a conversation. These answers explain how we evaluate business problems, shape solutions, and work with your team from discovery through ongoing improvement.
Working together
Getting started
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
We primarily help small and mid-sized businesses whose teams are losing time to manual processes, disconnected systems, spreadsheet-heavy reporting, or work that has become difficult to manage as the company grows. We work across industries and shape each engagement around the way the business actually operates.
How do we know if a process is worth improving?
A good candidate is usually repetitive, time-consuming, error-prone, difficult to report on, or dependent on one person knowing every step. During the initial consultation, we help you clarify the problem, understand its impact, and identify whether there is a practical opportunity to improve it.
Do we need to know exactly what solution we want?
No. Bring us the business problem, not a finished technical specification. We begin by understanding the current process, the people involved, the systems you use, and the result you want. From there, we recommend the simplest practical path forward.
What happens during the free consultation?
We discuss how the work happens today, where the friction appears, what it costs your team, and what a better outcome would look like. We will share an initial perspective and decide together whether a full intake and workflow analysis would be useful. There is no obligation.
Do we have to automate everything at once?
No. We typically begin with one high-impact workflow. This keeps the scope manageable, reduces implementation risk, and allows the business to measure results before moving to the next opportunity.
Solutions
Technology and delivery
Will we have to replace the software we already use?
Usually not. We prefer to get more value from the tools you already own before recommending another platform or subscription. That may mean improving the process, connecting existing applications, automating handoffs, or building a focused internal tool around a gap.
What platforms and systems can you work with?
Our work can include Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Dynamics 365, Salesforce, HubSpot, QuickBooks, ERP, CRM, HR, accounting, database, and other cloud or legacy systems. The right approach depends on the APIs, security requirements, data quality, and capabilities of the systems involved.
Can you build something custom if an off-the-shelf tool does not fit?
Yes. We build custom APIs, integrations, middleware, scripts, internal applications, reporting pipelines, and productivity tools when they are the most practical way to support the business. Custom work is designed around maintainability, security, and a clear operational need.
How do you approach security and access to our systems?
Security is considered during discovery and solution design, not added at the end. We aim to use appropriate access controls, limit permissions to what the solution needs, protect sensitive data, and work within the security capabilities and policies of your existing platforms.
The engagement
Scope, timing, and support
How long does a project take?
Timing depends on the process, number of systems, data quality, security requirements, and amount of testing involved. A focused automation or report may move quickly, while a multi-system integration or custom application requires more discovery and delivery time. We define the expected phases and timeline before work begins.
How are projects priced?
Projects are scoped based on the workflow, systems involved, complexity, and level of support required. Clients receive a clear proposal before work begins.
What engagement options are available?
Every business begins at a different stage. Modern Methods can provide workflow consulting and assessment, implement a defined workflow, combine consulting with implementation, or remain involved through ongoing support and optimization. Each engagement is scoped around the business need, systems involved, and desired outcome.
Can you provide consulting without implementation?
Yes. We can assess and document a workflow, identify improvement opportunities, and provide recommendations without requiring an implementation engagement.
Does Modern Methods carry professional insurance?
Yes. Modern Methods maintains Errors & Omissions insurance for its consulting and technology services. Additional documentation can be provided when appropriate during the contracting process.
How involved will our team need to be?
Your team provides the operational knowledge needed to understand the current process, validate the proposed workflow, and test the solution against real scenarios. We keep that involvement focused through stakeholder conversations, progress demonstrations, and clear review points.
Do you provide ongoing support?
Yes. Ongoing monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and workflow optimization are available when needed. We can also help identify the next high-impact workflow when the business is ready to continue improving.
